The factory

Heathkits were produced and distributed through the Gloucester facility from the mid 50’s until the demise of the brand in the early 80’s. The factory was modern in its day. There were several Schlumberger companies inside the factory, giving a slightly misleading perspective to the size of the Heathkit operation. I estimate that about half of the square footage was occupied by Heathkit. The remainder was shared with the Industrial Products Division who made X-ray thickness gauges for Steel Mills & Weston Instruments. Weston had a “sterile” facility for the manufacture of miniature potentiometers for pcb’s and other products. In 1976 Heathkit was sold to Zenith who moved out of the factory. The factory site was marked for development. A reduced size operation then took place at a nearby retail unit on Bristol Road, Gloucester until the end in 1983. This retail unit has now been absorbed by an adjacent tyre depot. As I write this in 2008, an American fast food restaurant occupies the old site and has done for many years. The road layout in the immediate area has also changed beyond recognition. I suspect this Web site is the only public record of the existence and activities that once took place there....
